EarthWyz – Roger Saul from Sharpham Park and Food Stylist Helen Upshall

Roger Saul from Sharpham Park and Food Stylist Helen Upshall

A really fabulous late afternoon cooking demonstration and lecture. Roger Saul talked with such great passion about spelt. It is clear that he is absolutely dedicated to growing and nurturing a completely organic and naturally produced product. We could have listened to him for hours. Helen produced a great cooking demonstration using spelt flour for pizza bases, and pearled spelt for a risotto. Everyone agreed that the bran banana muffins we sampled were light, fluffy and delicious; the pizza was truly scrumptious and the bacon and leek risotto was absolutely lovely. All the flavour and so light in texture.  The children enjoyed helping to make the pizzas and it was a really enjoyable event. The pizza was eaten reverently.

Some quotes from the audience:

“I loved be able to help make the pizza bases and to be involved.”

“The risotto was so full of flavour and so light.”

“I LOVED the bran banana muffins and will definitely try and make these at home.”

“I learnt so much about spelt. It is amazing that it is such an old grain and I really liked the link with Sharpham Park and that spelt was grown there thousands of years ago.”

“It was lovely to meet Mr Saul and Miss Upshall and I feel inspired to use spelt and bake more at home.”

“It was a fun demonstration, I didn’t know what spelt was until today. I loved seeing the raw spelt grains and hearing them as I ran my fingers through the bowl. They had a lovely sound.”

“A fantastic event. Thank you so much for coming to Hazlegrove.”

“The Food Technology pupils at King’s Bruton very much enjoyed a talk by Roger Saul and Helen Upshall. It was a very informative talk about Spelt and the different ways it could be used in cooking. This will help them to complete there Food Technology GCSE course work.” Miss  Sophie Liddell-Grainger, King’s Bruton
